Ron Jermyn
Sculptor, focusing on fluidity and the liquid state as a foundation for life
Born: 1955, San Diego, California
Lives: Grass Valley, California
Education: Self-Directed
We here in California are experiencing a drought which is reshaping much of our approach to water resources. Clearly, Water is Life, and with what appears to be a direct connection to global changes in climate. Within this context I feel that the theme of my current work is very relevant.
As a self-directed artist the journey that Ron has taken has led him through many doors. From the age of a teenager his love of art gave him grounding and a purpose. Sculpture provided the catalyst as an awakening for artistic direction. Ron says that the experience of creating sculpture washed over him, flooding his mind with ideas, thoughts and endless possibilities.
In the beginning his efforts primarily focused on working with the human figure. This, however, was not enough to satisfy his creative impulses, and following an inner force he began to experiment outside the constraints of the human form with organic concepts related to fluidity and motion.
The technique that Ron has developed has evolved to allow for an independent, intuitive unfolding of the creative process, which moves independently with its own force and purpose. Central to this experience is the interactive relationship with the materials. Working directly in bronze, stainless steel, stone, plaster or any number of materials each project unfolds with its own voice.
With the emergence of a new series based on the concept of the movement of fluid or liquid elements, Ron strives to utilize the primary elemental forms that drive every aspect of the physical world we inhabit, and capture a sense of the energy and movement of this fluid form. Each piece speaks with an archival voice, yet embodies the spirit of more recent and familiar imagery: The waves in Hokusai 19th century woodblock prints; the infinite repetition of fractals throughout nature; even certain elements found in the dramatic landscapes of Eyvend Earle; the motion of waves, tides, and storms that give a pulse of our living planet.
